Network Setup

Post by robertporter2394 »

I am trying to setup EssentialPIM Pro Business to use the same database on 2 PC's. I cannot figure out how to correctly setup everything to be able to connect to the server. When I try to connect all I get is my QnapNAS Server in the Browse for Computer dialog box. I don't understand how to open the necessary ports on Windows 11 Version 22H2 (OS Build 22621.2283).

Can anyone help, please?

I am a 77 year old male so using a lot of server terms will lose me very quickly.

Thanks For Your Help.

I have read the instructions several times. There is no real direction on how to do these things. I think it assumes I have knowledge I don't. I have questions.

1. The instructions state: "Server - enter server name or its IP address." I have no idea what either of these are, the name or IP Address.
2. Under Troubleshooting: I apparently do not know how to open the ports. Especially I don't know what whole range means.

When I try to connect the Server address 3 dot button opens "Browse for Computer" and only my QnapNAS shows.

Any detailed help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Click the button with three dots next to the "Server address" field and select your PC, which serves as the server. If the server PC is not visible, ensure it's connected to the same network. You can find its local IP address using this method: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 431160a1b9
2. Normally, there's no need to do this unless something is not functioning correctly. In most cases, everything works smoothly as expected.

I clicked on the button with three dots and the only thing I had was my QnapNAS showing. Firdbird is installed on this PC so how could it not be on the same network. I see a lot of people are viewing this question but no one seems to have any answers. Can anyone help me get this software working in server mode?

Thanks, Robert.

Robert,

It is hard to determine the problem without being able to see what you are doing.

On one of your PCs, you should have installed Firebird server, EssentialPIM, and your database. This PC will function as the server. On the second PC, you only need the program, EssentialPIM. Is this how you are set up?

When you
clicked on the button with three dots and the only thing I had was my QnapNAS showing
did you select your QnapNAS server? I think this is what admin was getting at when they said to click on the three dots and select your PC.

Hopefully this helps a bit.

Regards,
DG

I tried checking the QnapNAS but I got an connection error. I tried to open the ports like the help file said but I don't thing I did it correctly. Could that be the problem? What is the correct way to open Ports? Also in the help file it states regarding the Ports, "outgoing : whole range" and "incoming: whole range". I have no idea what that means.

It's as if the Firebird server is not running. How do I check to see if it is running?

If you have the ability to connect to my PC that wouldn't be a problem.

Thanks, Robert

Robert, as mentioned before, it is not necessary to focus on opening ports. Instead, you should focus on finding the local IP address of the PC on your network that has the Firebird server installed and running. I mentioned in my previous post how you can obtain the IP address. To confirm that the Firebird server is running, you can try opening a network DB from the PC with the server. If you need further assistance, please let us know. Thank you.

Could you please provide more information about the specific circumstances in which the error occurs? Specifically, it would be helpful to know the sequence of actions that precede the appearance of the error. Thank you!

1. I close the Database.
2. I click File/Connect to Server.
3. I enter the required information.
4. I click OK.
5. It open the Database with the above error.

One other question. Is it necessary to connect to the server, adding all the required info each time, every time you want access the Database?

Never mind I finally got it to work. Thanks for your help.

One last question. Is there any way to have the app, when it opens at bootup, for the navigation panel to be collapsed and setting on a specific topic?

Once again thanks, Robert.

Great, good to know!

Answering your question about about filling in the fields in the "Connect to Server" dialog. You only need to choose the server's name/address from the corresponding drop-down box, and the rest of the fields should be filled in automatically.

Regarding your latest question, I'm not quite clear on what you mean by "navigation pane" and "setting on a specific topic." Could you please provide more context or clarify your question so that I can better understand and assist you? Thank you!

I only use the notes section. On the left are the notes. Example:

Networking-------------------------------------------------Main Note
...Connecting to a server---------------------------------Sub Note
...Managing users------------------------------------------Sub Note

...Business license-----------------------------------------Sub Note

When the database is opened each day it is in the same state as when it was closed. I would like all of the notes collapsed and a certain note showing.

Hope this clarifies it some. I would attach an image but it appears there is no way to do this.

Thanks, Robert.

I understand now, thank you for explaining. Unfortunately, the option you asked about is not currently available. However, I appreciate your suggestion and we will definitely consider it for implementation in future versions of the app.
