First impression of the dark theme is good, but unless there is a hidden way to change a whole bunch of note title formatting all at once it seems I am stuck with the white theme, as half of all my note titles are colored dark making them unreadable and there are far to many of them to consider changing the colors one-by-one.

Also see attached image: It's not a nice practice to bypass the local DNS settings.

I love you guys! (Just can't keep it inside any longer :D )

A couple of small issues:

1.
Tools -> Options -> Appearance
Theme -> Change to Light (or Dark)
Apply
The option list multiplies:
epim90_1.png
2.
When I try to change a colour of a tag that has = symbol, there is an error (the tag was r=3):

Code: Select all

"3=255" is not a valid integer value.

There was an error during the execution of this program.
Click "Send" to submit the report to the developer. Please also provide any steps necessary to reproduce the problem.

''3=255'' is not a valid integer value.

+1 for needing a way to change note title colors in bulk.

Also the dusty black for the notes pane and editor make colors that work good between black and white look dull and harder to read in the dark theme compared to the light theme when they should be the same. It would be nice if the tree pane and editor were as rich a black in the dark theme as the white is bright in the light theme.

Which is to say I would really appreciate it if the note pane and editor in the dark theme was #000 as the light theme has them as #FFF

Rich black is important for a lot of visually impaired people who need the higher contrast, dusty black can cause them a great deal of issues.

It would also add much needed contrast between the note toolbar area and the editor which are currently the same color in the dark theme.

+1 Especially if it was used for the search background too.

Even just using the same black as the main tool bar would make things look a lot better contrast wise:

+1 The darker black looks a lot nicer, and would be easier to read on.

Anchor Feedback:

#1 Anchors can't seem to have spaces, which is kind of weird. You're not told you can't use spaces and the field accepts them it just greys out the add button if you have any making it a puzzle the first time you run into it.

#2 If you select text with spaces rather than converting the spaces to _'s or something useful it just uses the first word.

#3 All Anchors show up everywhere, but there's no way to tell where they are coming from?
I think there should at least be a tool-tip that pops up that showed you a note path, but just making the window bigger and adding a column with note names would be better. Especially if you could sort by said column.

#4 There should be a check box or something to only show Anchors in the current note.

Will try to implement the feature before the final release version is out.

I think this might be mutual

Confirm the 2 issues you mentioned, thanks!

FireBrand2026, MetalDrop, thank you both for the suggestions, will see what we can do about them.

Very interesting suggestions, indeed. I think at least some of the points will make their way into the final release version. The rest will follow.

This version of EPIM is for some reason trying to use a 3rd party DNS server (port 53) @ 8.8.4.4 [Google Public DNS] rather then the ones set by the system. Which is a bad practice. For security reasons I have all DNS traffic blocked except for my own approved servers [Google is not approved as they are a privacy risk] to prevent DNS bypassing and redirection like this.
[/quote]

It appears to be something in your new update code.

If I use the current Stable 8x version it uses the system DNS server and checks for updates just fine.

This RC however tries to connect to googles DNS server and then gives an access denied error.

Unfortunately that is not possible.
The email contains confidential data that I may not pass on to third parties.
In my opinion it has to do with the size of the attachment (attachment size 60MB). Since the error only occurs with this one email.

Indeed, it's not. And after installing the portable version of EPIM 8.61.1 Pro (parallel to my usual version, as some kind of a test platform), Windows FirewalI informed me immediately after its start that it has blocked outgoing connections to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 in this version too, so it's not a problem introduced by v9.0RC1. See this excerpt from the Windows security event log:
EPIM_DNS.png
It seems to be the check for updates. As soon as I turned this off, not further connection attempts were made. If turn it on again, three DNS servers are contacted in this order:

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
The IP address of my router (which is the one I have configured in my Windows network settings)

What the heck is going on here? There is no reason to use DNS servers other than the ones configured in the OS settings! Considering the fact that EPIM is propagating to be "Anti-NSA, CIA and other surveillance" (see https://www.essentialpim.com/anti-nsa), this is a serious breach of trust!

To continue Rose Ford's Anchor Feedback (all good points there)

#5
Insert Hyperlink -> Anchor link -> Select the anchor -> Ok.
Right click on the link -> Edit Hyperlink -> Edit Text to display -> The OK button is inactive until you manually change the path in Select anchor field (and it can be tricky if you have anchors with the same name in several notes, no indication if you are selecting the right one).

#6
Note1 has anchors.
Note1 -> Select All -> Delete. There is no indication that the anchors are still there.
Note1 -> Anchor button -> No anchors in the list.
After that it may seem that the anchors in Note1 were deleted, but it's not true:
- Note2 -> Insert Hyperlink -> Anchor link -> The anchors from Note1 are still there to be selected.
- Note2 -> Anchor button -> The anchors from Note1 are in the list and can be deleted from there.
It's strange when anchors are in the lists everywhere except for the note they are in.

#7
Insert Hyperlink -> Anchor link -> Select the anchor with a drop-down list is okay to test out the new feature.
But it'll be too crowded with active use after some time.
Just 100 notes with 3 anchors in each will create a long list of 300 anchors where you don't really see what are you selecting as there is no preview.
I think there should be some kind of a Browse button.
In truth, I don't really think that Anchors deserve a separate radio button (except for using it for creating links to anchors inside one current note, where the list of anchors wouldn't be that huge). I see them as more of an extension to the Item link.
For example, I am somewhere outside of the note (in another note/task/appointment). I want to make a link to it. In the process I may realise that I want that link to be to the note as a whole, to the particular leaf of the note or to the particular place (= anchor) in the note. The first two can already be added from the same interface, so why not add anchors there too? (and as there is a preview through the Details button, it's easy to make sure that you are adding the right link)
epimanchorlinks.png
epimanchorlinks.png (6.57 KiB) Viewed 4817 times
A list of anchors under each note's leaf + making them searchable by name in Find field would be nice.

#8
When I'm inside the note and want to make a link to it or its leaf to paste it somewhere outside, it's easily done through right click.
The same would be convenient with anchors too.
I see that the mouse cursor changes when I'm near a circle of anchor's line.
epimanchorcursor.png
epimanchorcursor.png (620 Bytes) Viewed 4817 times
How about 'Copy as Link' on right click there?
And also, in the Anchor list (on Insert Anchor button) 'Copy as Link' button would be a good addition too.

#9
No way to rename anchors?
I totally see myself having a typo in a word and deciding to change the name of some anchor, deleting and recreating an anchor with another name and then having to update all the links that were leading to it.

#10
I tried to export a note with this to html:
epimanchorexporthtml.png

Just thought that links inside one html page is the most frequent use of anchors. It didn't work for links. Oh, well, it would have been too perfect to be true.
