Bug 7.65: making backup lasts 30+ minutes, and EPIM freezes

Post by Trinitylab »

Hi Guys,

Newest EPIM Pro Biz Net, Win 8.1 x.64.
Just as in the subject.
I had two DBs opened, closed one of them, fine. Closed the last one, the small window popped up about EPIM making a backup.
I thought it needed some time. After 30+ minutes the window was still there, impossible to close, had to use Task Manager to kill it.

Hello,

if you are accessing database over Network (using Firebird server), please turn off EPIM's backup in Tools-> Options-> Backup
In case of Business version we strongly advice not to use built-in Backup: https://www.essentialpim.com/help/backingup.htm

Hi Max,

Thanks for the reply.
I have to admit I do not understand this from the help you linked to:
"In the network environment, where users may be actively working with a database but EssentialPIM is not running on the server, there can be a risk of not creating backups."
===
I just do not understand how "users", plural, can work with a given DB, but not through server. Seems to me impossible.

Here is what we do:
we have two DB, one main-M, the other for sales-S. They are both usually opened on two PCs.
Anytime we run EPIM, we work only via server tool, FB. Even if there is only one PC working, DB it's still opened via server.
Yesterday, what happened, was:
the guest PC was turned off, so no network work done,
only the host worked, and both DB, M and S were opened through FB server.
First I closed S, worked fine. Then I closed M, and the subject thing happened.
How the above procedure refers to the quoted help phrase? Do we make a mistake, where?

I will try to elaborate:
EPIM has built in backup feature. It works well only when EPIM database is opened directly (using FIle-> Open menu). If EPIM Database is opened via FB, backup might have issues.
Therefore, I suggest for you to turn off EPIM backup feature on all clients that access EPIM Database via FB.
The only exception that can be made is for EPIM Installation that runs on Server and thus can access EPIM database directly, via File-> Open menu (and not via FB)
