[SOLVED] [Sync] Switching on USB tethering automatically?

Post by littlebigman »

Hello

To sync the desktop application with a smartphone through USB, EPIM requires switching on USB tethering, which must be re-enabled every time the phone is plugged into the computer:

http://www.essentialpim.com/help/free/i ... _cable.htm

Is there an application for Android that could automatically switch on USB tethering when the phone is plugged into a computer?

And incidently, does the IP address and/or port number assigned to the USB connection remain the same every time, or will I have to change this setting in the Android application at every connection?

Image

Thank you.

Here's a list of apps I was able to discover that could theoretically do just that:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... btethering
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... b.automate
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ngs.plugin

IP address and the port number you enter are the ones from your PC. You can set up your home network so that the PC always has the same IP address (port number stays the same regardless of the IP address).

Thanks. I already tried two apps from the Play Store, but both only open the section in Settings and still require the user to hit a couple of clicks. I'll look further.

As for the IP, DHCP only handles the Ethernet/wifi connection. Not sure the IP address used for the USB tethering (192.168.42.169 in the screenshot) remains the same every time the phone is connected to the PC.

Ah you are of course right about the IP address part. It theoretically could change.

It is possible to tell Windows to always use the same IP address* when enabling USB tethering on Android :

https://superuser.com/questions/505338/ ... -tethering

That's one less hassle.

Next: There might be an application** to 1) enable USB tethering automatically when connecting the phone to Windows through USB and 2) clicking on EPIM's PC Sync > opening the menu > selecting "Connect manually".

* it can be 1-255 (or 254?) in the 192.168.42.x range
** eg. LlamaLab's Automate?

Suggestion: Add a "Connect through USB" button in the Sync section in the Android app, as a way to save a couple of clicks.
