TrackerV3 was allready a very good filemanager. It's renamed now to XYplorer and it's functionality is growing. I hardly use Windows Explorer anymore :)
Software: should we be aware because it's soft ? I like to think not !

EssentialPIM [www.essentialpim.com] is too good. I've been using it for past one year and I'm totally addicted to it.

Outlook is fine for a functional personal organizer, but use EPIM, and you'll never want to see Outlook ever again.

Here is the AIM Modifier I use. It doesn't work with the new Aim Triton and the support forum only supports up to a certain number in 5 series, but you can get it to work with 5.9 easy enough (there is a topic explaining that in the forum announcments).

http://middleman.krunchsoftware.com

it has the basics: cloneing, im log manager, talk while away. My favroite feature is the remote commands that let you log in from another computer and view IMs people sent you while away. Check them out, I love them.

Vim - Vi editor. Hard to get used to the 'vi' keys at first, but if you're a coder then definitely give it chance. It's completely changed the way I code.

SmartFTP - Excellent ftp client. Free for non-commercial use.

VirtualDUB - Freeware video conversion tool. I use it for converting to divx.

EMule - Peer to peer file sharing program. No spyware unlike some others I could mention.

AVG - Antivirus software.

Treesize - Great program for showing you where most of your hard drive space is taken up.

Bittornado - Bittorrent client.

Sygate Personal Firewall - Excellent software firewall

And last but not least - my own little freeware app called ECheck. It's the only piece of software currently on my site, but hopefully there'll be a lot more up soon. It's basically a pop3 email checker that sits in your system tray. The main difference between this one and others is that it actually tell you how many emails you've got as part of the system tray icon. You can download it from http://www.dracan.com/echeck.html. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

I am surprised that no one mentioned this website:

www.snapfiles.com

Most of the freeware items that mentioned in previous posts can be found at this website.

But pay attention only this version is freeware.

Does CUECard support English?

BTW, I think the development of KeyNote has been discontinued, at least for a VERY long time.

For those who need a dedicated record keeping /Journal / Diary type application ....this is undoubtedly one of the best I've seen

http://www.splinterware.com/products/idailydiary.htm

It is NOT a PIM ....Nor does it attempt to be one, but what it does, it does very elegantly and with a plethora of tools....

Cheers

"Desktop Sidebar provides you with instant access to the information you most desire by grabbing data from your PC and the internet. The result is a dynamic visual display you configure and control."

To clarify, it is a customizable sidebar that can have as many modules as one likes.

The best image viewer

Post by Dogo »

Irfanview at http://www.irfanview.com/

IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003.

It is trying to be simple for beginners and powerful for professionals.

IrfanView is trying to create new and/or interesting features in its own way, unlike some other graphic viewers, which whole "creativity" is based on feature cloning, stealing of ideas and whole dialogs from ACDSee and/or IrfanView! (for example: XnView is stealing/cloning features and whole dialogs from IrfanView, since 5+ years).

IrfanView was the first Windows graphic viewer WORLDWIDE with Multiple (animated) GIF support.
One of the first graphic viewers WORLDWIDE with Multipage TIF support.
The first graphic viewer WORLDWIDE with Multiple ICO support.

Another good freeware 'acdsee clone' is Faststone. This is the best one I've come across, and I've tried quite a few.

I'd really recommend Stickies by Tom Revell. It's free and you can find it at www.zhornsoftware.co.uk. It's the best sticky yellow notes program I've found.

Recently came across this new wallpaper-screensaver tool from Incredimail - Magentic. Somewhat similar to Webshots - and all the content is free, with much better resolution.

Check it out at: http://www.magentic.com

OK, the ones I use that have not been mentionned yet :
- FastStone Caputre : an excellent printscreen utility, that does all the other do, plus... and I think it's the only one that does it... capturing a scrollable window !! which means you don't have to shoot 3 times and then fix and stick the images together, FSCapture does it for you perfectly.
http://www.faststone.org

- PSPad : a free UltraEdit-like editor, not as good as UE of course, but an alternative that can surely be considered if you don't want to use cracked UE...
http://www.pspad.com

- the inevitable system monitoring utilities : File System Monitor, Registry Monitor, and Process Explorer from Sysinternals http://www.sysinternals.com, Space Monger from Werkema http://www.sixty-five.cc/sm/v1x.php, and System Information from G. Topala http://www.gtopala.com

- A copy utility that replaces the lame Windows copy : Copy handler http://copyhandler.com. I would have mentionned Supercopier too, but unfortunately the development of this excellent freeware is stopped, but you can check it out if you want to

- AutoWindow Manager at http://www.eusing.com/WindowManager/WindowManager.htm for PC install, or DM2 at http://dm2.sourceforge.net/ for portable install, are very good programs for window enhancements, featuring Always on Top, Minimize to tray, Transparency, Roll, etc...

- PStart is a nice program launcher, effective and discreet, with customizable settings, auto program scanning, notes... and most of all, it is portable, and recently even U3-packaged. http://www.pegtop.net

- Last, but not least, my favorite, the one that reaaaally eased my web-surfing life, one and the same : Roboform.
This app is a killer !
It stores all your login-password informations into individual "passcards", and by 1 click, enters them when you come to the corresponding web page. You can arrange the cards in folders, have different users with their own sets of passcards besides being windows-user separated.
It does pretty much the same thing with internet forms. It stores all the useful information needed to subscription forms (the identity card is just totally comprehensive, with customizable fields), and fills them into the form with one click.
It also has a password generator and a notes utility, and a multi-engine search feature.
All these data are protected by a master password, even possible to have another protective password for supervisors.
But what does it look like, you'll ask ? Well, just a bar, a simple and nice web bar, that has the good idea to hang on the bottom of the window in case of a "barless" IE window !
But there's more !! You can launch any passcard from the system tray icon, or even create passcards shortcuts in the desktop, or the links toolbar ! Double-click on the passcard shortcut, and it will launch your browser (or open a new window), go to the logon web page, enter your logon info, and submit.
Mails, online bank accounts, boards, e-stores, all your accounts are centralized, and can be brought with you wherever you go... Yes ! Roboform is portable, U3-portable, PDA-friendly, and even compatible with portable Firefox !

The freeware version allows 10 passcards and 2 identities, but u can try the unlimited version for 30 days, and consider buying it after that, since the price is quite reasonable for an app of this quality ! Just check it out : http://www.roboform.com

My Top 3 of the very essentials are EPIM, Roboform and Maxthon.
