Epim won't sync with iPad or iPhone

Post by j.crawford »

Using Epim 5.03 on Windows 7 and Epim for iOS 2.5 on iOS version 5.1.1 (don't want to upgrade to iOS6)

I have followed the instructions for installation and troubleshooting and
continue to struggle with trying to get this to work. What happens is nothing,
both windows come up, on the device and in EPIM, Then nothing.
Attached there is a zip file that contains a log file and several screenshots.
Let me know if you need anything more.

Hello,

try to delete those synchronizations from EPIM and re-create them using Wizard again (File-> Synchronization-> Add Synchronization)

One last resort:
go over this list:
http://www.essentialpim.com/help/troubl ... hroniz.htm
if it does not help, there is nothing I can do. It does work for most users.

I have been through all of that a bunch of times with no success.
2 questions then.
I am on 5.03, I am going to try a re-install is there a beta version available that I can try.
Can you give me a a description of how it works from a programmers point of view not an end users point of view. Such things like which end looks to connect, does it use Bonjour to find the other sync partner and what is the protocol that is actually used to transmit data.
Have you thought of using DropBox as a transfer mechanism. I use another program that tried to use wireless updating and struggled with it they finally went DropBox and haven't had a problem since the change.

Ok tried a couple of things there is a Bonjour sniffer for Windows and one for iOS. Set those up (attached are the two screen shots) thought maybe someone there could use these to help diagnose the problems I am having.
A few things to remember, the name of my Windows machine is 'Compaq', I am trying to sync both an iPhone and an iPad, not at the same time but neither works.
It appears that the iPhone has the correct machine name, IP address and port.

We have 5.5 Beta, within 2 weeks we will have Release Candidate, you can try it then.
EPIM on Windows uses Bonjour to announce the service, which iOS App sees and connects to. If it does not see it- the list above list possible reasons for this.
