I just synced this with my Audiovox SMT 5600 Smartphone. This is great because I haven't been able to get other software to work syncing Outlook contacts to my Smartphone including Activesync and Intellisync. Definitely a reason to migrate from Outlook to Essential PIM.
Problems:
1 Duplicate calendar entries were created on in EssentialPIM, presumably when it was pulling in the apts that were on the phone
2 syncing the iCal Holidays that went from EssentialPIM to the phone and syncing them back to Outlook via Activesync.
3 I wiped out the data on the phone to do a fresh sync and the contacts synced but no apts got sync to the phone
I think the Smartphone capability should definitely be pursued and promoted.

We've already made some improvements with synchronization and the things you mentioned should be fixed by now. Let's see how it all goes with Beta3. Thanks!
Android version of EssentialPIM. Keep all your data in sync!
