[closed] Contacts of Epim Account not visible after reboot

Post by Nurgotora »

I have withdrawn this issue as I was unable to reproduce it on a 'factory wiped' device and could not find a cause on the original device - despite the persistent reproducibility there.

---------------------------------------
Original Post:

AEPIM 5.6.2
WEPIM 8.15
Android 9 Pie (LineageOS 16.0 2019-04-07)

Clean Setup on Android
Option Use EPIM System Account
Perform Sync
Everything is fine, Contacts are in AEPIM and contacts are visble in Phone app, Contacts app, K9 emailer, etc.

Reboot Android

Contacts are still in AEPIM
Not one single contact visible in PhoneApp, ContactsApp, K9 emailer, or any other

====

On an AEPIM 5.6.2 regularily updated all the way from 5.3.5, the "Sync Contacts to Phone" is still available. Sync takes much, much longer, but it works exactly as expected.

Can not we have that back, please?

1. Please check if you still have the EPIM's account visible in the third party apps as it was before reboot.
2. Sync contacts to "Phone" option should be available if your device reports there's such account.

Re 1: EPIM's account was not visible in any third party app at any time (e.g. stock contacts app, stock phone app), but the contacts were. EPIM's account was listed in "settings, accounts" all the time.

Re 2:
a) There's a "device" account listed in third party apps (e.g. stock contacts app, stock phone app), but in "settings, accounts" there's just google and EPIM.
b) The Sync contacts to "Phone" is visible on a freshly installed AEPIM version 5.3.5 and in any subsequent update right up to 5.6.2 - but not in a freshly installed 5.6.2

a. Sorry not sure I understand what you meant in Re2 but you probably need to enable visibility of the EPIM's account in the third-party apps' settings.
b. Will check this out.

Because I needed a solution quickly, I have used a 5.3.5 initial install to get the Sync contacts to "Phone" option, upgraded that to 5.6.2, and finally synced the contacts successfully to 'Phone' ...

... I reconstruct this from memory (if it still does not make the issue clear, I'll try to find the time to reproduce it with an old phone and screenshots - let me know).

A. WEPIM 8.15 with a full database, ~400 contacts, ~4000 calender entries, etc.
B. A fresh, factory resetted / wiped Android 9 Pie with a google account

On Android:
- Install AEPIM 5.6.2 Pro on Android

- Make the usual preliminary settings (password for module Passwords, weekstart, ...)
Note, that the Sync contacts to "Phone" is missing from "Sync To PC" settings

- Go into (still empty) calendar, tasks, and notes to answer the intial question "... sync with google ..." with "No!"

- Go into (still empty) contacts
- Answer the question to use the system account with "Yes"
- Answer the question to import existing contacts with "No" (phone is still totally empty anyway).
- Answer the question "... sync with google ..." with "No!"

* Under Android, Settings, Accounts there are now two accounts:
1. <deviceownersname>@googlemail.com
2. EPIM

* In Android's stock app for contacts, "Contacts" (which has no contacts yet, naturally) under options, accounts: EPIM is not listed, just the following two:
1. <deviceownersname>@googlemail.com
2. Device

- Now synchronize (for safety reasons "one way EPIM -> Android")

* In AEPIM all ~400 contacts are listed in module Contacts
* In Android's stock app for contacts, "Contacts" all ~400 contacts are listed
* In Android's stock app for phone all ~400 contacts are listed
* In Android's stock app for sms the contact's names are listed (as conversation headers)
* In K9-mail all ~400 contacts are available for selection in To, bcc, etc.

So far so good.

- Reboot Android

* In AEPIM all ~400 contacts are listed in module Contacts
* In Android's stock app for contacts not a single contact is listed
* In Android's stock app for phone not a single contact is listed
* In Android's stock app for sms just the phone numbers are listed (as conversation headers)
* In K9-mail not a single contact is available for selection in To, bcc, etc.

I did try that several times with identical results.[1] I seem to remember to have synced once again after reboot resulting in some (not all!) contacts (re)appearing in Contacts, Phone, sms, mail

===

Possibly related information:
- The setting in Android, Settings, Accounts, "Synchronize Data automatically"[2] is "off"

-----------
[1]: Definition of madness: Doing the same over and over again and expecting different results. ;-)
[2]: Or similiar worded - translated free hand.

Most likely that's the wrong option you're accessing. You should be able to customize view and then you can choose contacts from which accounts will be shown. That's most likely the reason for you not seeing any contacts after reboot in the stock apps.

No, sorry, I am not accessing the wrong option, that are all options available and the EPIM contacts are shown (please read again):
....
* In Android's stock app for contacts, "Contacts" (which has no contacts yet, naturally) under options, accounts: EPIM is not listed, just the following two:
1. <deviceownersname>@googlemail.com

Maybe the underlying cause is in fact that the stock android 9 apps (note: all of them!) do not recognize the EPIM System Account, but they do list the contacts after sync and before reboot - but do not list them after reboot.

Nope, that's not the underlying course as all works as it should on our devices with Android 9. As I mentioned, I think you should check preferences of the third-party apps.

The preferences of the stock android contacts app did not show anything else:

1. <deviceownersname>@googlemail.com
2. Device

***

However, I had some time yesterday evening and tried to reproduce the issue on a 'factory wiped' Android 9 Pie - in vain: Everything worked just as expected. I also could not find out which setting / circumstances / unrelated thing causes the still persistent reproducibility on that other device.

Case closed.

***

Concerning Bug2, "The Sync contacts to "Phone" is visible on a freshly installed AEPIM version 5.3.5 and in any subsequent update right up to 5.6.2 - but not in a freshly installed 5.6.2", I found out that this option is visible initially, but disappears forever after having been used once! I'll open another thread with screenshots.
